1. You own nothing on social media
Your Facebook page, Instagram account, or TikTok account don't belong to you. They belong to the platform. And the platform can change the rules at any time — it can reduce organic reach, suspend your account, or disappear.
It's already happened: in 2021, Facebook and Instagram went down for several hours. Thousands of businesses that depended exclusively on these platforms couldn't be reached by customers. If all your traffic is on a third-party platform, you're completely vulnerable.
Your website is the only digital space you control 100%. No one can take away your domain, delete your content without your consent, or restrict your access to your own customers.
2. The algorithm decides who sees you — not you
Organic reach on Facebook has dropped dramatically in recent years. A page with 10,000 followers organically reaches 2–5% of them. Want to reach more? You pay for ads.
On your website, anyone searching for your service on Google can reach you — without you paying per click, without depending on an algorithm. Good SEO brings consistent traffic, month after month, year after year, at no additional cost per visitor.
3. Google doesn't index Facebook pages
When someone searches Google for "web designer Bucharest" or "psychology practice Sector 3", the results are websites — not Facebook pages. Social networks are practically invisible in Google searches.
That means all search traffic — people actively searching for your service — can't find you if you don't have a website. And these are the most valuable potential customers: they have clear purchase intent.
4. Social media is for discovery. Your website is for decision-making.
Social networks are excellent for being discovered, for building a community, and for staying connected with followers. But when a potential customer wants to make a purchase decision, they look for credibility.
A professional website with testimonials, portfolio, clear information about services and pricing, contact details, and legal pages communicates seriousness. A Facebook page alone can't do that at the same level.
Think of yourself as a customer: if you had to choose between a vendor with a well-built website and one with only a Facebook page — who would you choose?
5. You can't control the user experience on social media
On Facebook or Instagram, visitors are surrounded by distractions — ads, friends' posts, notifications. You can't control what they see before or after reaching your content.
On your website, you're the only message. You can guide visitors exactly where you want — from the services page to the contact form, from your portfolio to the booking button. Every element is there for a purpose.
6. Customer data doesn't belong to you on social media
If you have 5,000 followers on Facebook, you don't have access to their emails, you can't contact them directly, and you can't export the list. If tomorrow Facebook decides to block your page, you lose everything.
On your website, you can collect emails through forms, build a newsletter list, and communicate directly with your customers — with no intermediary, no algorithm, no cost per message.
7. Serious customers check your website before buying
High-value projects — a website, a renovation, a medical service, consulting — involve more careful research on the customer's part. They won't order from Facebook without first checking that you're real, that you have experience, and that other customers were satisfied.
Not having a website in 2026 isn't neutral — it's a red flag for potential customers. "If they don't have a website, they're not serious enough." It's an unfortunate conclusion, but it's the one many people draw.
Conclusion: Social media + website = the winning combination
I don't recommend giving up social media — quite the opposite. Social networks and your website complement each other perfectly. Social media brings visibility and engagement. Your website converts visitors into customers and builds long-term credibility.
If you can only choose one — choose the website. It's the only digital space you own completely and that works for you 24/7, regardless of social media algorithms.
